Getting Started - A beginners guide to CMS websites


Below are extracts from the Help pages provided and maintained by DREAMGenie and relate to how to manage your site and it's content. These help pages are stored externally to your site and are updated on a regular basis and can be accessed at any time via a pop up window.


Users - DREAMGenie has FOUR levels of User access. Administrator - Users at this level can access all the features of DREAMGenie. Staff - Users with this level of access can create/edit web pages, news, events, blogs, forums, testimonials, FAQ's, links & knowledge base but cannot change the site settings. In addition they can create/reorder dashboards, menus, and templates. Users - These are visitors to your site that have registered to use the site and have submitted their email address and possibly other details about themselves. Users at this level can respond to blogs and participate in forum discussions and may have access to certain web pages. Guests - These users are NOT registered and cannot participate in forum discussions and certain web pages may not be accessible to them.

CMS - Or Content Management System - Located at the bottom of every webpage is an edit link that is only visible to logged in users with the authority to edit that pages content. By clicking on the link you are taken directly to an editor window for that page. So making changes to your content has never been easier. 

Wizards - All the System controlled pages of content, Events, News, Blogs, Testimonials, FAQ's, Knowledge Base, Shop, Adverts etc each have their own Wizard to ensure that content is entered and displayed correctly.

Basic IT Skills - Only basic IT skills are required to manage your sites content, as the WYSIWYG editor window looks very similar to Microsoft Word.

PC or MAC - Because no software is required to be downloaded on your PC or MAC you can access your site from any web browser window anywhere in the world regardless of platform. It is also possible fo multiple users to be editing/updating content on your site at the same time.

How long will it take - Provided you already have your images and text content prepared you can get your site up an running in just a few days. This site was put together in just 2 days!!

Site Settings - From within the [Site Settings] control panel you are able to configure most of the basic 'Look and Feel' of your website.

WebPages - Web pages will form the bulk of the content that you create for your site so DREAMGenie has provided some very powerful in built features to allow you to create and control how you pages will look. Web pages can be created either by using the WYSIWYG page editor or by using one of the many in built Templates provided from within DREAMGenie.

Menus - In DREAMGenie the default position of your main menu bar will be horizontally near the top of the screen just below your masthead. In addition you can also display secondary menus vertically down the sides of selected pages, or embed menu links in custom dashboards.

Photo Galleries - Photo Galleries are system defined file locations where groups or Galleries of related images are stored. Using Galleries simplifies the way you store and manage images in your site as you do not need to keep track of where your images are stored.

File Management - Within DREAMGenie there are TWO types of files, SYSTEM and USER files. System content is entered via a series of input wizards like Events, News, Photo Galleries, Documents etc. and the system automatically files your images etc away in special dedicated folders. In all other content like your standard WebPages you are in control of where these images etc are stored.

Dashboards - Dashboards are the single most powerful feature of DREAMGenie, and make it easy to put text or image links to the left or right of your webpages making it easier for your users to navigate to specialized content within your site. It is well worth spending the time fully understanding the potential of these in your site as they enable you to display a huge amount of content via a single page and have been designed to offer you huge flexibility and be fully customizable.

News Articles - These are system generated pages that can be automatically displayed via a number of different in built Dashboards options within DREAMGenie. As well as text and images News articles can include Photo Gallery and Video Content.

Events - An Events is a system generated page that is associated with dates and time. Once created this single piece of content can be automatically displayed via a number of different in built Dashboards options within DREAMGenie.

Blogs - A Blog is a system generated page that can be automatically displayed via a number of different in built Dashboards options within DREAMGenie. A Blog consists of text and images entered into the WYSIWYG editor. The creation date and time of a Blog is always displayed in addition to the content.

Adverts - DREAMGenie has been designed to support two kinds of advertising: Private Adverts - Both Text and Display advertising are supported and you choose who and what is displayed and for how long. In addition you set the scale of any fees to be charged. Google Advertising - Both Text and Display advertising are supported and you decide how much space is given over to advertising but Google determine what adverts are displayed based on the SEO Keywords and the content of your WebPages. The money you earn is based on a pay-per-click basis.

Shop - The standard version of the DREAMGenie shop is designed for sites offering a few hundred products for sale. The prices shown are inclusive of VAT and carriage. To make finding products easier individual products can be grouped into any number of Product Categories . There are no stock levels attached to products so it is assumed that all items displayed are available to buy. Also included in the site search are all the items in the shop so users can always search for an item by its product code, price etc.

eMarketing - This suite of programmes allows you to create and manage newsletters. Organize your email addresses into groups and via the built in mail server broadcast your newsletters directly to your customers.

Hotel Management Suite - Wether you run a large hotel or a guest house, camp site or caravan park, everything you need to manage online bookings / payment is contained within this suite of programmes. 

Please note: Depending on the package you have purchased some of these functions may not currently be available to you, but can be obtained at a later date as an upgrade. Also DREAMGenie may log you out of the control panel after 20 minutes of inactivity.
